Inverness pool houses for a lake-chain weekend

Boat ramp and dock at Wallace Brooks Park on Lake Henderson in Inverness, Florida, with anglers launching in the morning

If there are six of you and the plan involves a boat ramp before breakfast, start with Villa Boer, Villa Havelaar or Villa Willow Wood. Each is a three-bedroom single-family house in Inverness with a private outdoor pool and parking on the property, and each sleeps six. Push to eight and Villa Lovie opens up, with a lake view and a hot tub. At ten, Villa S&G takes the whole group and allows pets.

That's the short answer. The longer one is about how a Tsala Apopka trip actually runs, because the chain is not one lake you park beside. It's a scattered system of pools, marshes and open water east and south of town, and the way people fish it is by trailering to whichever ramp suits the day. Which means the house you want isn't necessarily the one closest to water. It's the one with the driveway, the kitchen and the pool deck that work when you come back wet and sunburned at four.

Where you'll actually put the boat in

Downtown Inverness is the hub. Wallace Brooks Park, on the curve of Lake Henderson, has a ramp and a boat house, and Henderson is part of the Tsala Apopka chain, so you're on the system from the moment you leave the trailer. Largemouth bass is what people are after.

  • 44 East, just east of downtown on Highway 44, has two ramps onto the chain, and it's the one most groups with a trailer end up using.
  • North Apopka suits kayaks and canoes better than anything with a big outboard. It reaches Little and Big Lake Henderson, and it's close enough to the shops and restaurants downtown that you can walk from it.
  • Eden Park Boat Ramp, on Park Lake Terrace, puts you into the Inverness pool of the chain, with free launching and a decent amount of parking.
  • Liberty Park on North Apopka Avenue has parking and restrooms, which matters more than it sounds like it should at seven in the morning with kids in the car.

One practical constraint worth knowing before you book anything: these houses cap you at three cars per reservation. For a group towing a boat, that's usually fine. For eight friends arriving separately in eight vehicles, it isn't. Work out the carpool before you commit, not after.

Three houses for six people, and they're not interchangeable

All three sleep six with a pool outside, but they're built for different weeks.

Villa Boer has three bathrooms for three bedrooms, which is the detail that decides it for groups of adults who've all been on the water and all want a shower at once. There's a jacuzzi on the pool deck and a dedicated workspace indoors if someone in the party is pretending not to be working. Its guest reviews sit higher than almost anything else we manage in Inverness. The house also sits close to the Withlacoochee State Trail, which runs 47 miles through this part of the county and crosses Inverness right by Wallace Brooks Park.

Villa Havelaar is the biggest of the three by floor area, at just over 1,600 square feet, and it shows most around the pool, where there's real room for loungers rather than a strip of deck. The kitchen is fully equipped, down to the baking sheets and the wine glasses, and there's a dining table big enough for everyone to sit at the same time. That matters when the plan is to cook what you caught, or more honestly, to cook something from the supermarket because the fishing was slow.

Villa Willow Wood runs leaner: two bathrooms rather than three, five beds across three bedrooms, a balcony and a pool. For a family with children, where the bathroom queue is less of a negotiation, it does everything the other two do. Its pool can be heated by electric heat pump on request, for a fee, with a two-night minimum.

When six becomes eight, or ten

Small groups have a way of growing between the first message and the deposit. Two houses absorb that.

Villa Lovie takes eight across four bedrooms: one king, two queens, two twins. It's listed with a lake view and has both a pool and a hot tub, which is the combination that suits a trip built around the water. The pool and hot tub can be heated for an extra charge; the hot tub can be heated day by day, the pool needs a two-night minimum. No pets at this one.

Villa S&G is the one for ten, five bedrooms and three bathrooms on a quiet street of palms and old oaks, with a private pool and a long dining table. It's the most reviewed house in our Inverness collection by a wide margin, and it's pet-friendly, so the dog comes too. Long-term stays are allowed here, which makes it a candidate for a snowbird month rather than a long weekend. Pool heating is available for a daily charge with a two-night minimum.

The thing nobody factors in: a pool is not a lake substitute, it's a lake recovery room

Guests book a pool home thinking of the pool as the main event, then spend the week on the chain and use the pool for twenty minutes at five in the afternoon. That twenty minutes is why every house on this page has one. Florida sun on open water is a different proposition from Florida sun on a deck, and the pool is where the day ends rather than where it happens.

The same logic applies to the kitchens. Our houses are stocked with coffee makers, pots and pans, dishes and the small things people forget they need: baking sheets, kitchen towels, detergent pods, fresh linens and towels waiting when you walk in. You don't want to be shopping for a frying pan at nine at night because someone brought back dinner on ice.

What to eat, and the trail you'll keep crossing

Downtown Inverness is built around Courthouse Square and Main Street, and it's compact enough to walk once you've parked. Stumpknockers on The Square and Cedar River Seafood are both on West Main. Salty Dogs Steamer and Bar does seafood and steaks on the Square itself, and The Side Bar Tavern sits a few doors along with a front-row view of whatever parade or Bike Fest is rolling past. Twysted Vyne is a wine bar on Main Street in the middle of it all, and Angelo's Pizzeria & Ristorante is further west on the same road. The Hen House Cafe is in the historic district.

If the group splits (half fishing, half not), the Withlacoochee State Trail solves the other half's day. The Inverness trailhead has a bench, a red caboose and parking for around twenty cars, with more across at Liberty Park. Ride south and it's about seven miles to Floral City, which is a civilised distance for lunch and back. On the way you pass the back entrance to Fort Cooper State Park, a historic site a couple of miles south of town off US 41 on South Old Floral City Road. It has 5.5 miles of hiking trails in three loops, a beach on its lake, and entry costs a few dollars per vehicle, less if you've arrived on the bike.
