Where to stay in Inverness for a group riding the Withlacoochee

Cyclists riding the Withlacoochee State Trail

Start with Villa S&G, then work down

If there are ten of you and you want one roof, book Villa S&G. Five bedrooms, three bathrooms, sleeps ten, a private pool out back, and a kitchen with a full-size range that can actually produce dinner for a group that has been riding since morning. It sits among pastures in a quiet Inverness neighbourhood of palm trees and old oaks. One caveat worth knowing before you divide the driving: no more than three cars per reservation.

If you're eight, Villa Lovie takes over: four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a king, two queens and two twins, a lake view, and a hot tub that will matter more than you think on the second evening. Below that, three different three-bedroom houses sleep six each, and the choice between them comes down to what your group does when it gets off the bikes.

That's the short answer. The longer one is about how the trail actually works out of Inverness, because that changes which house you want.

Inverness sits in the middle of the trail, which is the useful bit

The Withlacoochee State Trail runs forty-six paved miles along the river and through the state forest, the longest paved rail trail in Florida, with ten trailheads along its length. Inverness is near the middle. Gulf Junction, up in Citrus Springs, is the northern gateway, and Inverness is roughly sixteen miles south of it.

Being in the middle is why groups base here rather than at either end. You can ride north one day and south the next without shuttling cars, and anyone who wants a short day can turn around and be back before the rest of you. The Inverness Trailhead is on North Apopka Avenue, marked by a restored 1925 caboose and a pair of painted turtles, with parking, restrooms and a picnic area. The 1892 depot stands next to it. Heading south, the trail passes an entrance to Fort Cooper State Park, which has a pay station, restrooms and picnicking, before reaching the Floral City Trailhead where the north and south segments meet. Floral City is about eleven minutes by car from Inverness, which is worth knowing if half your group wants to ride one way and be collected.

Mixed-ability groups do better here than they expect. The trail is flat and paved, so the people who ride forty miles and the people who ride eight are on the same surface, and both can meet at the caboose.

If you need bikes, or a trike

Inverness has more rental options than a town this size has any business having, and they're clustered within walking distance of each other. Inverness Bicycle & Fitness is on North Pine Avenue, two blocks from the trailhead at Wallace Brooks Park. Trek Bicycle Inverness is also on North Pine, doing rentals, sales and repairs. David's World Cycle rents bikes and trikes. There's an electric-bike shop sitting right on the trail on US Highway 41, open Monday to Saturday, though those bikes have to stay local and can't be loaded onto a car.

Down near Floral City, across from the trail, Trailside Trikes specialises in recumbents and trikes, which solves a problem for anyone in the group whose back or knees have opinions about a conventional saddle.

One date to know: the Friends of the Withlacoochee State Trail run an annual ride on the first Sunday in October, with around a thousand riders picking their own distance up to a century, and breakfast and lunch at the Inverness Trailhead. If your group wants company and a reason to book, that's the weekend.

The three-bedroom houses, and how they differ

All three sleep six, all three have a private pool, and none of them is a compromise. They just have different afternoons in them.

  • Villa Boer has three full bathrooms for six people, which is the single most useful number in this article when everyone comes back muddy at the same time. There's a jacuzzi, a dishwasher, and a dedicated workspace if someone is half-working. Its guests rate it the highest of any home here. The house is a short hop from the trail.
  • Villa Havelaar is the biggest of the three by floor area, roughly 1,600 square feet, with a large pool deck, plenty of lounge chairs, a patio, and a dining table meant to be sat around. It's in a small, quiet neighbourhood with easy access to the trail. Coffee is in the kitchen, along with wine glasses, a blender and baking sheets.
  • Villa Willow Wood has five beds across its three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a balcony and flat-screens in the living room and master. It's the simplest of the three, and the five-bed layout suits a group of friends splitting rooms rather than a family with a fixed pairing.

Booking two houses for a group of twelve is a real option and plenty of groups do it. The pool, the kitchen and the laundry all stop being bottlenecks, and you get two cars' worth of parking instead of one house's limit. The cost is logistics: agree on one house as the dinner house before you arrive, or you'll spend the week texting about it.

Heated water in winter is not an afterthought

January and February are the best cycling months here and the pools are cold. Each of these houses can have its pool heated for a daily fee, with a minimum number of nights, and the jacuzzis at Villa Lovie and Villa Boer can be heated day by day. The exact charge and minimum vary by house, so check the listing for the one you want. A group that rides thirty miles in the morning and then gets into an unheated pool in February learns this the hard way.

The hot tub is the part worth paying for. After a long day on a flat paved trail, the thing that aches is the lower back, and an hour in hot water fixes more of it than a nap does.

What's in the house when you walk in

These are handpicked private villas, which in practice means someone local has been through each one and they arrive ready rather than merely clean. You'll find the kitchen stocked for cooking, not just for reheating: pots and pans, baking sheets, dinnerware and utensils, a coffee maker with the first morning's coffee already there. Fresh linens, towels and washcloths, kitchen towels, travel-sized toiletries, laundry detergent pods, dish detergent and trash bags are all in place.

The detergent pods sound like nothing until you're on day three with six sets of cycling kit. Every one of these homes has a washer and dryer, and a group that rides daily will use them daily.

Some homes in the portfolio take dogs and cats. Villa S&G is one of them. The three-bedroom houses and Villa Lovie are not, so if the dog is coming, that narrows the list to the biggest house on this page.

Days off the bike, from the same driveway

Fort Cooper State Park is a mile or so of trail south of town and holds the ruins of a Second Seminole War fortification, which makes it the natural half-day for anyone sitting out a ride. Cooter Pond Park and Liberty Park are both in town. The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum is downtown Inverness. Citrus County Speedway sits just south of town, across from the airport, near the paid access trail into Fort Cooper.

Crystal River is about half an hour west by road, which is where the manatees are. If the group splits, that's usually the split: half riding, half in the water. For something louder, Wild Bill's Airboat Tours and All American Airboat both operate in the area.

On the trail itself, two places get named by riders over and over: Ferris Grove for strawberry shakes and shortcake, and Burger Station for lunch. Plan a ride that ends at one of them and the mileage takes care of itself.

Three things to settle before you send the deposit

Confirm the car count first. Three cars per reservation is the rule at these houses, and a group of ten arriving from different airports usually wants four. Either consolidate at the pickup or book two houses.

Second, check the pool and spa heating when you book rather than when you arrive, since the minimum-night requirement means it can't always be added on the day.

Third, ask us about the trail before you finalise anything. Sections of the Withlacoochee have been resurfaced in stages, and we know which stretches are riding well in any given month. We're a local team and we book direct, so the answer comes from someone who was on the trail recently rather than from a page that was written last year.
